Winter Walk / Intro to Snowshoeing -- Saturday, January 7, 2012       Time: 9 am

           

Join NNC Naturalist for a winter walk through the forests of Navarino; if conditions are favorable we will go on snowshoes.

Fee: NNC members $2, Non members $5, Families $12

 

Navarino History: Agriculture to State Wildlife Area — Saturday, January 21, 2012    Time: 1 pm

Come out to hear the history of how the Navarino Wildlife Area was created from farms of the 1910-30’s to creation of the wildlife area in the 1950-60’s.

Fee: NNC members $2, Non members $5, Families $12

 

Candle light ski / snowshoe hike — Friday, January 27, 2012              Time: 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm        

Snowshoe or ski the one mile loop across the boardwalk and back by the light of the stars, moon and candlelight.

Snowshoeing Navarino — Saturday, January 28, 2012            Time: 9 am

Snowshoe across the bog, toward the beaver lodge on Pike’s Peak Flowage.

Owls of Navarino — Friday, February 10, 2012            Time: 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm  

Walk / snowshoe a section of Navarino listening for owls and other wildlife.

Porcupines and Snowshoes — Saturday, February 11, 2012   Time:  9 am    

Snowshoe in search of porcupines and other wildlife.

Birds and Binoculars – an introduction to birding – Saturday, February 18, 2012        Time: 9 am

Learn about our local birds, ways to identify them and how to get the most from your binoculars.   NNC will have binoculars and scopes available for use.   Bird games and activities for children will also be available.   Fee:   NNC members $2, Non members $5, Families $12

Beginner Basket Weaving Class  — Saturday, March 10, 2012   Time:  8:30 am

Learn how to make a market basket (as seen in photo), class will be led by Marilyn Manthei of Shawano. 

Cost for the class and materials is $40.00.   Limited to 10 people, RSVP for the class by Wed., February 29, 2012.

 

Rain Barrel Workshop — Saturday, March 17, 2012                 Time: 10 am

           

Looking to add a rain barrel to water the flowers or garden, come out to NNC and make your own or take a pre-made barrel.

Make your own:  $40 per barrel,   Pre-made barrel $50 per barrel    (White or Blue available)

 

Leopold Bench Workshop – Saturday, March 17, 2012            Time: 1 pm

Create a Leopold bench for your backyard or garden.   All pieces will be pre-cut and drilled, please RSVP by Friday, March 9th, 2012.   Cost:  Treated lumber bench $50,   Cedar bench $100

 

Willow Trellis Workshop at Navarino Nature Center – Saturday, March 24, 2012      Time: 9 am

Make a willow bent wood trellis.  Trellis when completed is close to 8’ high by 36” wide.   Class limited to 12 people,  RSVP by Wednesday, March 21, 2012.   Equipment needed: hammer, pliers, wire cutters, tape measure. 

Fee: $30 per trellis

 

NNC Shoot at J & H Game Farm Navarino – Saturday, March 31, 2012       Time:  8 am – 3 pm

Fee:  $25 per person,   re-entry $15                 Proceeds benefit NNC educational programs.

 

Sandhill Crane Count — Saturday, April 14, 2012                    Time: 5:30 am – 7:30 am

Contact NNC if interested in counting cranes in Shawano Cty.

 

Spring Clean-up on Navarino – Saturday, April 14, 2012         Time 8:30 am

Volunteer to help pick up trash along roads and parking lots on the Navarino Wildlife Area.   Cookout for the volunteers at Noon at the nature center.

 

Navarino Trail Fun Run / Walk – Saturday, April 28, 2012       Time 8 am to 11 am

Run or walk a 5K section of trail on the Navarino Wildlife Area starting at 9 am, then at 10:30 am there will be a 1 mile kids run.   Cost: 5K  $20 before April 15, $25 April 15 to race date;  1 mile kids race $10.  Contact: 715-758-6999 or nnc@navarino.org

 

Earth Day Open House — Saturday, April 28, 2012     Time:  11 am to 2 pm     

Crafts, activities, games, wagon rides, music, food and more.

 

 

Woodcock presentation / survey — Wednesday, May 2, 2012              Time: 7 pm

Presentation 7 pm, traveling survey on the north end of the wildlife area to leave NNC at 7:50 pm. Survey participants will need to carpool.

Wandering down the Wolf River — Saturday, May 5, 2012                  Time:     8:30 am 

Canoe from Shawano down the Wolf River to Hwy CCC.  Enjoy this two hour float down the Wolf River on the spring melt.  Canoes, PFD’s and paddles are provided.  RSVP by Wednesday, May 2, 2012 by calling 715-758-6999.     

Fee:  $20 per person

 

7th Annual NWA / NNC Prairie Bird Survey  — Saturday, May 19, 2012           Time:  5:00 am to 9 am

Help survey 12 prairie sites across the wildlife area.  We survey each site by listening for 10 minutes and recording the number of birds heard.  There is a job for everyone, whether you’re just getting started in birding or an expert birder.  Contact Tim at NNC for more information.

 

Wild Edible Hike – Saturday, May 19, 2012    Time:  9:30 am

Guest speaker Brian Pierce will lead a “Wild Edible / Foraging” hike around the nature center and wildlife area.   Come along for the hike and learn what plants you can pick and eat along the way.   Bring your binoculars too, as Brian will point out birds too!

7th Annual NWA / NNC Forest Bird Survey — Saturday, June 2, 2012      5:30 am to 10 am

Help survey forest sites across the wildlife area.  We survey each site by listening for 10 minutes and recording the number of birds heard.  There is a job for everyone, whether you’re just getting started in birding or an expert birder.  Contact Tim at NNC for more information.

Voyaging down the Wolf River – Saturday, September 22, 2012         Time: 8:30 am to 2:30 pm

 

Canoe the Wolf River in the DNR Voyageur Canoes, all equipment is provided.  Bring a lunch and any personal items.  RSVP by Sept. 14, 2012.

Fee:  NNC members $15, non-members $20

 

7th Annual Geocaching Event at NNC - Saturday, October 6, 2012      Time: 8:30 am to 3pm

 

Teams / individuals use GPS units to see how many geocaches they can find on the Navarino Wildlife Area.   Meals can be purchased at NNC between 11 am to 2 pm at the Fall Family Fun Day event.

 

 

Fall Family Fun Day – Saturday, October 6, 2012                    Time: 11 am – 3 pm

           

Family oriented activities and crafts, wagon tours of the wildlife area, renewable energy displays and activities, fun for the whole family.    Fee: Free

 

 

Sunset Wagon Ride – Saturday, October 6, 2012                     Time: 4 pm – 6:30 pm

 

Two hour wagon tour through the Navarino Wildlife Area viewing waterfowl, fall colors and hundreds of Sandhill Cranes on the return trip.

           

Fee = NNC members $5, non-members $10

 

 

 

 

Halloween Happenings – Saturday, October 27, 2012             Time: 6:30 pm – 8:30 pm

           

Non-scary Halloween event consisting of Halloween games, a Jack-o-Lantern Trail walk, and food around a bonfire.  

 

Fee: $3 per person

 

 

Wreath making workshop – Saturday, November 10, 2012     Time: 9am

Create a 24” wreath using various evergreens from the wildlife area, then create your own bow to top it off.    Fee:  $25 per wreath

 

 

Cross-Country Ski Trails – Open December 2012 or January 2013
